Staying safe in hot weather |
|
Several heat waves this summer increased the risk of heat-related illness. Certain groups are especially vulnerable to extreme heat, including older adults and people with chronic medical conditions. |
Although temperatures may cool down in September, we may not be done with summer heat. Knowing how to prevent heat illness and recognize the warning signs can help you stay safe. |
Heat illnesses and injuries range from heat rash and sunburn to more serious conditions such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. |
People who have heat stroke need emergency medical attention. Symptoms include confusion, agitation, trouble walking or talking, nausea or dizziness. |
Symptoms of heat exhaustion generally appear before heat stroke sets in. People with heat exhaustion are likely to appear overheated, sweat profusely, have a quick pulse and feel tired or weak. They may also have muscle cramps, nausea or vomiting. |
Even though heat illness can become serious, there are steps you can take to prevent it. |

Managing inflammation with whole-person care |
It can be confusing when you have symptoms such as fatigue, pain, stiffness and brain fog, and yet there’s no clear cause. In this episode, Dr. Eve Glazier talks with Mihaela Taylor, MD, UCLA Health integrative rheumatologist, about how rheumatology connects the dots between symptoms, the immune system and inflammation. They also discuss how a whole-person approach can help patients better understand their symptoms and manage their health. |
