Open schools later so teens can get enough sleep, say US doctors

Important article about rampant sleep deprivation in teens resulting in mental and performance issues. Maybe a contributor to the issues we've had with teen mental illness, shooters, etc?:

NEW YORK (AP) - Jamie Masada, the owner of the fabled Los Angeles-based comedy club the Laugh Factory, vividly remembers a warm exchange with comic Richard Jeni of the two sharing words of encouragement and gentle ribbing.

"The next day I heard he put a gun in his mouth and blew his head off," recalled Masada of Jeni's 2007 suicide. "At that point I said, 'God, could I do something to som...

EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) - It's not much of an exaggeration to say that Jo Macsween has haggis in her blood. The business founded by her butcher grandfather is a leading purveyor of Scotland's national dish: a blend of offal, oats and spices, traditionally served in a sheep's stomach.

Macsween is all too aware how unappetizing that might sound. She has dedicated her life to transforming t...

ASTHMA is VERY DANGEROUS when DIVING!

Diving is extremely dangerous under these asthma and air pressure scenarios where the lungs can burst.   There is even exercise-induced asthma among normal folks.  The lungs MUST be clear and able to equalize pressure at varying depths.

There is the case of the 32 year old woman who was a fine diver but experience asthma symptoms at 18 meters depth and ended up with a burst lung when she rose to the surface.  Read more from the link below:

What You Need to Know About Card Skimming

There's no magic answer yet, Interac Inc claims that Chip and Pin systems have done a lot to reduce debit and credit card fraud in Canada, but these systems are still backward compatible with the swipe system.

The best advice is to pay some attention when paying for your transaction or taking out cash. Since the reader device is typically only secured with double sided tape, yank on it. You're not going to break anything. Give the ATM a bit of scrutiny before using it. Does it look like the others nearby? Are there any strange-looking bits that bulge out? Look above the keypad or to the side for pinhole cameras. If anything seems out of place, don't use it! Find another.

Cover your hand when entering your PIN number! It's a really easy thing to do and that one step will absolutely make the collected card details worthless.

Avoid cold drinks and sweet drinks -- drink tea or water!

Avoid cold drinks as this confuses your digestion with what appears to be colder weather and therefore generate more fat cells.  Avoid sweet drinks or pseudo-sweet diet drinks because again your body responds inappropriately.  Drink no soda pop, but instead develop a taste for teas.  Hot tea is excellent and therapeutic for your body.  If the weather is too warm, then do room temperature tea.  Water is the best drink.  But cold water or ice water is not recommended....  room temperature water is best for your body.

What size meals should we eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner?

One of my favorite health professionals is the Chinese doctor who runs New Earth Acupuncture in Thousand Oaks, CA.  I'd like to repeat the special diet advice that she recommends:  Eat like a king in the morning, queen for lunch, and a pauper for dinner.  In other words, you should have your largest meals earlier in the day but explicitly avoid a large heavy meal in the evening.  Why?  Your metabolism slows down into the evening as you prepare for sleep.  Having a lot of food in your stomach when you sleep is NOT good because this will convert to fat layers when your metabolism is lowest during sleep.  This is often responsible for the love handles around the belly that are so hard to lose.
