Caribbean blues: Mosquito virus is sickening more travelers

Thousands of travelers to the Caribbean and nearby regions are coming home with an unwanted souvenir: a mosquito-borne virus that recently settled there.

The virus, called chikungunya (chih-kihn-GOON'-yuh), causes severe, often disabling joint pain, and few U.S. doctors are prepared to recognize its signs.

At one New York City hospital, a woman arrived in such agony she had to be ad...

Best Gentle Antihistamine and Local Internist Doctor

Best Gentle Antihistamine and Local Internist Doctor

The gentle antihistamine that I've found helpful as needed is sold over the counter and called "Chlorpheniramine Maleate" (commonly sold under the name "ChlorTabs").  No side effects noticed. (Especially good since powerful alternatives like Benadryl are notorious for inducing drowsiness.)

I use this for allergies such as runny nose, itchy eyes, and also to help with minor reactions to insect bites.

About local Internist doctors, Dr. Dhanes with Arroyo Oaks group in Thousand Oaks is good.  He's a bit older and we're not sure if he's talking new patients.

OSWIECIM, Poland (AP) - A decade ago, 1,500 Holocaust survivors traveled to Auschwitz to mark the 60th anniversary of the death camp's liberation. On Tuesday, for the 70th anniversary, organizers are expecting 300, the youngest in their 70s.

"In 10 years there might be just one," said Zygmunt Shipper, an 85-year-old survivor who will attend the event in southern Poland to pay homage to th...

WASHINGTON (AP) - Be prepared for the tax man to get even more personal this year - with questions about your health insurance.

For the first time, you'll have to state whether you had health insurance, through an employer, one of the exchanges or purchased privately. And if you didn't, you could face a penalty.

Also, if you got advance payments of the premium tax credit under the A...

From Egypt's leader, an ambitious call for reform in Islam

thumbnail

CAIRO (AP) - Egypt's president opened the new year with a dramatic call for a "revolution" in Islam to reform interpretations of the faith entrenched for hundreds of years, which he said have made the Muslim world a source of "destruction" and pitted it against the rest of the world.

The speech was Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi's boldest effort yet to position himself as a modernizer of Islam. Hi...

Car headlight bulbs

Philips & Sylvania both make good bulbs!

By Orlando - July 11, 2014

----------------------
QUICK REVIEW
----------------------
Great product but the title is misleading and may confuse some of the more ignorant buyer.

First, Philips bulbs and Sylvania bulbs are both good, so if you're confused on which to get, consider this first;

Sylvania are found in automotive stores all over the USA, even Walmart and such. Philips wont be in most cases, so a lot harder to find locally than Sylvania so if your bulb goes out and need to quickly get a new one, Sylvania might be a better option. However, both products are of high quality and I can highly recommend both.

More about the Philips bulbs. They are NOT HID bulbs, they are standard bulbs that are marginally brighter than your stock bulbs (most likely the lowest-end Sylvania bulb). True HID kits require 35w or 55w Ballasts. These bulbs DO NOT have Ballasts. These Philips bulbs are rated at 4300k, which is the same color as a OE/OEM light which are also 4300k. If you're looking for a white bulb in color you will need/want something 5000-6000k.

----------
ADVISORY
----------
1. These will not require any modification your stock headlight/lamp/housing whether projection or not. Not mods needed/required.
2. These bulbs are MARGINALLY brighter than stock OE bulbs, MAYBE up to 15%.
3. These bulbs are rated at 5000k which has more light spread than 4300k bulbs but visibility may not increase based of bulb brightness.

If you're wondering which Philips Vision light is best, here are all the lights in order from WORST to BEST (prices vary)

Philips Vision - WORST
Philips VisionPlus
Philips X-tremeVision - MIDRANGE
Philips CrystalVision Ultra
Philips CyrstalVision 5000k
Philips DiamondVision
Philips Xenon Standard - BEST

---------
PROS
---------
Brighter (marginally, maybe 10-15%)
Decent Quality
5000k

----------
CONS
----------
NOT True HID - High-intensity discharge lamps
WILL NOT GIVE YOU 100% MORE LIGHT - DONT BE FOOLED

Take comfort in an almost effortless onion soup

Talk about a vegetable that's everywhere. The humble onion is one the most common aromatic vegetables, popping up in so many ways across so many cuisines.

And it's not just for taste. The onion also happens to be a terrifically healthy ingredient. If nothing else, it's a delicious way to add bulk to a dish without adding many calories or any fat. Thing is, Americans typically use onions i...

WASHINGTON (AP) - With a bright look to its rebuilt website, version 2.0 of President Barack Obama's health insurance overhaul represents another chance to win over a skeptical public.

But more than possible computer woes lurk as HealthCare.gov's second open enrollment season begins Nov. 15.

The risks include an unproven system for those renewing coverage and a tax hit that could st...
